Top research based on industry needs

The strength of the engineering industry in the Tampere Region is based on continuous top -level research and product development. The research in information and communication technologies is essential also for the product development of engineering industry. But as well the research in 'traditional' engineering areas such as materials, mechanical design, hydraulics and automation and production technologies is crucial to sustain the competitive edge.

In the core of technical research in the Tampere Region are the Tampere University of Technology (TUT) and VTT the Technical Research Centre of Finland. One of the main strengths of the region is multidisciplinary approach and smoothness of cooperation between companies as well as between companies and TUT and VTT.

Research and expertise cooperation is boosted according the focused regional business development strategy and coordinated under the umbrella of Centre of Expertise Programme.

Some main research and development players in the Tampere Region:

TUT / Institute of Hydraulics and Automation IHA. Top research in the fields of water hydraulics, free piston engine, digital hydraulics, tele (remote) operation and machine automation

TUT / Institute of Production Engineering IPE. Research in production automation and automated systems, flexible manufacturing, light assembly automation, thermo coating

ROViR Centre, cooperation of VTT and TUT/IHA. The centre is concentrating in virtual technologies and remote operation. ROViR Centre belongs to European Fusion Programme and developes extremely demanding remote operated service systems for ITER furion reaktor.

Optoelectronics Research Centre ORC and Competence Centre of Laser Technologies. Fiber lasers and laser applications research and testing unit.

In addition to areas mentioned above, VTT is active in many fields in Tampere. Such as research of intelligent machines, active noise control and service and customer care operations.

Sentre, Centre of Sustained Energy Solutions. Sentre is a network of research and business concentrating in sustainable, environment friendly energy solutions.

Research units work in very close cooperation with leading mechanical engineering companies in development of advanced products and solutions, such as automated mines and container terminals, intelligent machines and clothing, embedded software solutions, wireless and mobile communication, navigation systems, sensors, user friendly man to machine interface, life cycle concept in customer relationship and services, rock crushing and drilling technology, glass processing technologies.
