In the area of digital signal processing the roots certainly lie in the presence of Nokia Research Center and the cooperation between NRC and Tampere University of Technology. One concrete result of this cooperation is the the Nokia Communicator, which first model was developed in Tampere.
In the field of telecommunications the special focus areas in Tampere region are broadband data transfer together with wireless and optical telecommunication. Opteoelectronics, in turn is the fastest growing area within the field of electronics. Microelectronics and semiconductors have long been included to the key areas.
Software development in Tampere region has traditionally been supporting the other key areas within ICT cluster. Adaptive software components together with embedded software are examples of the expertise fields of the sofware developers. Human computer interaction representes one of the top expertise areas. Within the fields of user interfaces and information perception together with the emerging field of neoreality new knowledge is created especially at the University of Tampere and combined with the industry into working practical concepts for example in new mobile services.
