One of the most important advantages of Tampere region is the size; being a relatively small region enchances the cooperation between different actors and enables the creation of trusting atmosphere. Compact size, strong public sector support combined with world-class expertise makes us one of the top R&D hubs in Europe.

Within Tampere University of Technology the Digital Media Institute (DMI) specializes in digital signal processing, networked multimedia and embedded software systems. The Institute carries out basic research and product development that aims to generate practical applications. The research fields of the Optoelectronics Research Centre (ORC) include semiconductor technology, fibre-optic telecommunication and applied optics. ORC was established in 1999 on the existing foundation of the University’s semiconductor laboratory.

At the University of Tampere the Hypermedia Laboratory is an expert in understanding the questions of the social and cultural dimensions of the information and communication technology. The research projects conducted in the Hypermedia Laboratory concentrate in planning and developing new digital user-friendly services that help people in their everyday life. The Tampere Unit for computer Human Interaction (TAUCHI) consists of several top research groups including multimodal interaction group, information visualization research group, gaze-based interaction group and learning and collaboration based technologies group.

The Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) is an impartial expert organisation that carries out technical and technoeconomic research and development work. VTT also produces information services. In Tampere VTT has several key research areas covering for example fields of intelligent products and services, wireless automation, mobility information applications, human interaction tehcnologies, and advanced an electronic materials.

Nokia in Tampere is basicly concentrating on R&D in different fields. In Nokia Research Center the research carried out covers for example the areas of wireless multimedia and usability.
